The decision to attend a vocational-technical college is an extremely important one. The specialized education and training will provide you with the necessary tools and knowledge to be successful in the career of your choice. But how will you pay for it?

Education is an investment in your future. Before you choose your career, it is necessary to consider how much time, money, and commitment you have to prepare yourself for a career. Choosing the right career and paying for college takes planning, forethought, dedication, and commitment.

Financial Aid can be the stepping-stone to your future success. The purpose of financial aid is to assist students with their educational expenses so that financial barriers do not prevent them from achieving their educational goals.

What Is Financial Aid?

Financial aid is the assistance available to help students pay for the costs of attending a vocational-technical institution. Financial aid is provided by federal, state, institutional, or private sources and may consist of grants, loans, work-study, or scholarships. Each year, billions of dollars are given or lent to students, and about half of all college students receive some sort of financial aid.

Most financial aid is awarded based on financial need, college costs, and the availability of funds. This aid is provided to students because neither they nor their families have all of the resources needed to pay for a college education. This kind of aid is referred to as need-based aid.

What are the eligibility requirements?

In general, to be considered eligible for federal financial aid, you must:

o Be a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen

o Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited institution

o Be making satisfactory academic progress in your course of study

o Not be in default on any loan or owe a refund or repayment on any previous financial aid received at any institution attended

o Be registered with the Selective Service, if you are required to do so

Merit-based aid is awarded to students who may or may not have financial need. Students are given assistance because they have a special skill or ability, display a particular talent, have a certain grade point average, or are enrolled in a specific program.

Types and Sources of Financial Aid

There are several types of financial aid offered to help pay for educational expenses:

o Grants

o Loans

o Student employment (work)

o Scholarships.

Grants and scholarships are “gifts” and do not have to be repaid. Loans are borrowed money that must be paid back over a period of time, usually after the student leaves school. Student employment is normally part-time work arranged for a student during the school year. Wages received by the student are used for specific college expenses.

The primary source of aid for students attending a vocational institution of higher education is from the federal government. The federal government offers both grant and loan financial aid programs. State assistance may also be available. Other sources of aid that award money to students come from private foundations such as corporations, civic associations, unions, fraternal organizations, and religious groups. In addition, many companies offer tuition reimbursement to their employees and/or their employees’ dependents. The personnel department at either your or your parents place of employment can tell you whether or not the company offers this benefit and who may be eligible. Lastly, there are also some colleges that offer awards from their own funds or from money received from various organizations. This type of aid is often referred to as “institutional aid.” Although most vocational institutions have little or no institutional aid available, the student should still be sure to ask the college about this type of assistance.

Determining Financial Aid Eligibility and Financial Need

Eligibility for financial aid is determined by subtracting the amount you and your parents can contribute from the cost of attendance. An assessment of your family’s ability to contribute toward educational expenses is made based on the information you provide when applying for financial aid. Income, assets, family size, and number of family members in college are some of the factors considered in this calculation. This assessment, referred to as need analysis, determines your financial need, which is defined as the difference between the total cost of attendance and what you are expected to pay. Financial need will vary between colleges because of each school’s different costs of attendance.

Determining the Student’s Status: Independent or Dependent?

Remember that both students and parents are expected to help pay for college costs. This means that you, as the student, will be expected to contribute to your educational expenses.

If you are considered dependent by federal definition, then your parents’ income and assets, as well as yours, will be counted toward the family contribution. If you are considered independent of your parents, only your income (and that of your spouse, if you are married) will count in the need analysis formula.
To be considered independent for financial aid, you must meet one of the following criteria:

o Be at least 24 years old.

o Be a veteran of the U.S. armed forces.

o Be married.

o Be an orphan or ward of the court.

o Have legal dependents other than a spouse.

o Be a graduate professional student.

Applying for Financial Aid

To apply for financial aid, it is essential that you properly complete the necessary forms so that your individual financial need can be evaluated. It is important to read all application materials and instructions very carefully. The Financial Aid office of the school you are attending will be happy to provide you with guidance and assistance.

Most vocational schools use just one financial aid application called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is a four-page application available at your college’s financial aid office, local high school guidance offices, and state education department offices. Students can apply for federal student aid via the Internet by using FAFSA on the Web. FAFSA on the Web can be accessed at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Your Rights and Responsibilities as a Financial Aid Recipient

As a student consumer, you have a right to:
o Be informed of the correct procedures for applying for aid, cost of attendance, types of aid available, how financial need is determined, criteria for awarding aid, how satisfactory academic progress is determined, and what you need to do to continue receiving aid

o Be informed of the type and amount of assistance you will receive, how much of your need has been met, and how and when you will be paid

o Appeal any decision of the financial aid office if you feel you have been treated unfairly with regard to your application

o View the contents in your financial aid file, in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act;

o Know the conditions of any loan you accept.
It is your responsibility to:

o Complete all application materials truthfully and accurately and comply with deadline dates

o Review all materials sent to you and read and understand all documents. Be sure to keep copies of all forms you sign

o Know and comply with the rules governing the aid you receive

o Provide additional documentation and/or new information requested by the financial aid office

o Maintain satisfactory academic progress

o Keep your local and permanent addresses current with all pertinent school offices

o Use financial aid only for expenses related to the college

Remember that your dreams come true when you act to turn them into realities. Financial aid is the means by which you can achieve your dream of obtaining an education and pursuing your career. Use it wisely and you will succeed.

Nowadays, more and more people feel the need for a higher education. A college state university can open a fantastic world of knowledge, a whole new experience and a future world of success, prosperity and stability. Students of the 21st century have various perspectives and opportunities.

One of the major advantages of going to a college state university is their athletic programs. Many notable academic institutions have well-trained athletic teams and participate in all kind of competitions. Attending a college state university which has a good team includes televised games, pep rallies, homecoming parades and of course rivalries.

Still, a respectable and accredited college state university has much more to offer. The principle of a sound education stands as a golden rule in all prestigious institutions and this is why many are equipped with large libraries and media centers. Students have plenty of places to study and also plenty of computer labs with high-speed Internet access. They can study online courses and research for various projects. A full-equipped college state university has a library, a study hall and of course several computer labs.

When deciding to attend a college state university, one must also enquire about the social opportunities. Among these are included: fraternities, sororities, clubs and student government organizations. All these things are a good part of the whole college experience; joining a fraternity or sorority can help to build team spirit or develop better communication skills, not to mention meeting tons of new people.

The state of Georgia has a lot of institutions that provide the possibility of higher education. Attending a Georgia college university can be a wonderful experience into the world of knowledge. There is a wide range of subjects and qualifications to follow. Education programs at a Georgia college university include lectures, seminars, workshops, trainings and practices.

Almost every Georgia college university has high tuition fees and this is not a bad thing. These fees usually cover access to university books, software and computers. Future students are advised to inquire about all the facilities offered by a Georgia college university before applying for study. Also, one must find out as much as possible about financial aid availabilities and apply for student education loans system if necessary.

The wonderful blend between the academic program and the athletic one offered by a Georgia college university can only lead to well-prepared students, always ready to face the real world and eager to work. A higher education requires much study, research, writing and reading. The important thing is that is pays. Learning the value of high determination from college is vital in order to be prepared for the future.

Before applying at a Georgia college university, one can attend a student fair and find out more about the facilities offered. The alternative is going online and using online services offered by most universities. Colleges are now providing various services in order to orient students and they do that by giving them as much useful information as possible about courses available.

Online services provide details about almost every Georgia college university that is out there. You can find lists of subjects, courses and also information about Financial Aid. Some websites even have an online forum where one can enter and ask questions or just discuss with students. Such services are real useful to students and usually they help them decide for which university to apply.

The social environment is very important for a future student. He will always investigate the college society, availability of night clubs, sports clubs and beaches nearby. These things are sometimes almost as important as accommodations, meal plans and living expenses. All add up to form the life of a student, a world full of dreams and opportunities.

It can be difficult for anyone who works to obtain a college degree or to increase upon their current level of education. This can be especially difficult for those people who are pursing a degree in a nursing field. The attempt to juggle work, classes, family and clinical hours can be overwhelming and discouraging. Advances in technology have now made it a little easier to obtain your degree and reach your goals.

Numerous colleges now offer degrees online, including nursing degrees. The advantages of taking nursing courses over the internet are numerous. With online courses a student can continue to work while attending college, without having to adjust a work schedule around a class schedule. Students no longer have to commute to a campus only to waste more time searching for a place to park. No more paying for a parking permit to park on the campus that you are paying to attend. No more sitting in a classroom for hours each day only to listen to an instructor lecture on the topics that you have already read about. Imagine being able to log onto your class when it’s convenient for you. These are just a few benefits of obtaining your degree online.

Online nursing courses are not as difficult as one may think. Once classes begin the student will log into their internet classroom. Most college sites will have a list of courses that you are registered in. Clicking on the course name will take you to more information about that particular course. You can locate your syllabus, assignment schedule, contact info for your instructor and classmates, forums and chat rooms to talk to other students, and detailed instructions on how to submit assignments and complete your course. Help is always available from either the instructor or other classmates.

Online college students qualify for the same Financial Aid as the traditional campus based student. Federal Student Aid, State Student Aid, Student Loans, Scholarships, and grants are all available for application. Federal and State Aid have financial requirements for qualification, but anyone, regardless of income or credit history, qualifies for student loans. Make sure you apply by the due dates for student aid so you don’t miss any assistance you might qualify for.

People who are already working in the medical field as a nurses aid, LPN or RN who would like to increase their education and certification usually have even more advantages available to help them succeed. Many healthcare employers now provide tuition reimbursement and/or scholarships to employees who want to expand their education. If you can’t afford to pay the tuition and await the reimbursement then consider a student loan than you can repay once you receive your tuition. Contact your human resource department to find out what is available. Another advantage is that many hospitals have set up study groups for online nursing students. This provides nursing students with the advantage of personal interaction with other nursing students of varying education.

To obtain a nursing degree, you may be required to complete clinical hours within a medical and/or hospital setting. You may wonder how you can do this if the college you are taking online courses through is across the country from where you reside. Your instructors will help you set up these clinical hours at a medical facility near your home.

The demand for nurses has risen dramatically and shortages in the nursing field continue to be a problem. With the advent of online nursing classes, more people are able to obtain their degree and provide much needed medical care to the people of your community.

The cost of education is on the rise. States are spending less on higher education, forcing colleges and universities to pass the extra costs onto students. Tuition and fees have nearly doubled at some institutions, and there is no relief in sight. That’s the bad news. The good news is that there are several ways to help allay the rising cost of college. Here they are, in no particular order.

Accelerate Your Degree
Essentially, accelerating your degree means cramming a semester’s worth of material into a six-or eight week session. Many schools are now offering these accelerated sessions, and while classes can be intense, the benefits are that they allow you to take classes more quickly and thereby move up your graduation date. By accelerating your degree, you spend less time in college and can start your career sooner, which saves you time and money.

In addition to these accelerated sessions, you should also consider summer school or evening classes, which are often cheaper than regular classes and which also speed up the learning process.

Become a Transfer Student
One of the best kept secrets in higher education is that of transferring. The idea here is to earn as many credits as possible at a low-cost community college before transferring to a pricy, elite school prior to graduation. This way you can still get a diploma from a prestigious university but at a fraction of the price.

Furthermore, because community colleges are less competitive, you will be a better candidate for scholarships and other Financial Aid. What’s more, by attending your local community college, you can also reduce room-and-board costs by bunking at your parents house.

Go Where You’re Wanted
Conventional wisdom says you should go to school you want. But if you are trying to cut costs, maybe you should consider going to the schools that wants you. In other words, find the college or university that is dying to have you as a student, fire off an application, and then watch the discounts roll in. Star students get discounts on tuition as well as housing and other fees. The trick is to find the school that thinks you’re a star. Start by checking out the smaller, regional colleges in your area. Chances are you may be exactly the kind of student they’re looking for.

Apply For a Pell Grant
Every year, the U.S. Government provides millions of dollars worth of grants to help students finance their college education. A grant is an ideal way to help pay for college for two reasons: first, grants do not have to be paid back, and second, grants are awarded based on need. What this means is that depending on your financial need you can receive a federal grant or Pell Grant worth anywhere from $400 to $4000 dollars. Typically, Uncle Sam sends the money directly to your school of choice to apply directly to tuition. However, if your tuition is already paid for through Scholarships or other financial aid, the money is dispersed directly to you to cover other expenses such as housing, books, and transportation.

To apply for a Pell Grant all you need to do is fill-out a Free Application For Federal Student Aid or FAFSA, which you can do online at fafsa.ed.gov . The application will take about an hour, but you will need your Social Security Number, driver’s license, income tax return, bank statements, and investment records.

Never Give Up On Scholarships
Many students think you need a 4.0 GPA to land big scholarships. But that’s not always the case. Even with strictly academic scholarships, you have a fighting chance so long as your grades make the cutoff, which may be as low as 2.75. What have you got to lose? Furthermore, there are plenty of non-academic scholarships you can apply for, including scholarships for athletics, military service, community service, and leadership.

Also, in addition to college or departmental scholarships, there are thousands of private organizations and religious organizations who also offer scholarships. And don’t forget about local or community-based awards. Although these scholarships are typically more modest, they are easier to win. What is best is that you can apply for (and receive) multiple scholarships, which means if you don’t land a big, ultra-competitive, academic scholarship you can still get the same amount of money through a combination of smaller, less-competitive scholarships.

When it comes to paying for college, the important thing to remember is that education is an investment. And like the old adage says, you’ve got to spend money to make money. That being said, there are ways to curb the amount you’ll have to spend to get a quality education. You just have to be creative.

I’ve already gotten my Financial Aid for this year, so that shouldn’t change (right?) but I wasn’t sure if this would affect my financial aid for the next years. My parent’s income should stay roughly the same, albeit seperate.

I believe you send in the information for one or the other in that case…do you live with one? That would narrow it down. My parents have been divorced forever…my brother lives with my mom and claims only her income for financial aid purposes.

Planning to go away or to start college is a fun and exciting time for those students who are planning on attending. The stressful part usually comes from finding the resources to pay for your college education. It is important that you and your parents plan out together how much money you are going to need for college and where the money will come from to cover your college expenses. You will need to sit down with a pad of paper and a pen in order to write everything out. The earlier you start planning, the better. This way if you or your parents need to make adjustments, you can do so before it is time for you to head off your freshmen year.

Figure out your costs:

1.Tuition & Books: Contact the colleges and/or universities that you are interested in attending. Ask specifically about the estimated costs for tuition and books. Usually the estimate of these costs is provided in the college brochure.

2. Housing: If you are planning on living on-campus, you will also need to obtain housing information. Housing information should include the cost and what the cost includes. Some colleges and universities offer meal plans to students who live on-campus, which provides you with a certain amount of money to eat at the campus restaurants, cafeteria and cafes. If you are planning on living off-campus, you will need to do a little research on the average cost of rent for the area. Also be sure to include extra costs such as electric, phone, water, etc.

3. Food: You have to eat, so be sure to include spending money for food in your calculations.

4. Spending money: College is more than just academics. There are student activities that you are going to want to participate in throughout the semester. Be sure to allocate a certain amount of money to spend on going out with friends, going to the movies, participating in a sorority or fraternity, etc.

5. Tally up your costs on an annual basis and then be sure to multiply the annual cost by how many years it is going to take you to complete your particular major. Usually, 4 years is the number you will need to multiply by, unless you already know that you will be going to on to graduate school, law school, medical school, etc. If that is the case, you will need to go through the same 5 steps for the costs involved with these types of schools (adding it to your undergraduate college costs).

Tapping Into Your Resources:

Once you have an idea of what the cost of your college education is going to be now it is time to list out all of the possible resources that you can tap into to pay for everything. You will need to sit down with your parents and go over all of these costs that you have tallied. Find out from them what source of funds they have and are willing to contribute. You may also have some resources of your own that you can contribute.

Here is a list of possible resources to consider:

1. Savings or Investment Accounts

2. Pre-paid College Tuition Program

3. Education IRA, ROTH IRA, or Retirement IRA

4. Savings Bonds

5. Contributions from Grandparents or other family members

6. Scholarships*

7. Grants*

8. Student Loans*

*You may not know the contribution amount of these resources yet.

After you have a list of your possible fund sources and the total amount that each resource can provide, total everything up. Where does this leave you? Do you have enough to cover your college education or are in the hole? If you are in the hole, then you should come up with a plan on how you and your parents can make up for the difference. Research Scholarship and grant opportunities that you may be able to qualify for or pick-up a part-time job after school to help contribute to your college savings. Your guidance counselor at school and the Internet should be able to help you find scholarships and grants that you may be eligible for. Especially, if it is your senior year of high school, contact the financial aid department of the college you will be attending. Find out when they deadline is and what forms you have to complete to apply for Financial Aid.

There are resources available to you for paying for your college education. Just be organized and diligent about finding out what the costs are, what resources you have available to you, and whether or not you to find additional resources to cover your college expense.
