The decision to attend a vocational-technical college is an extremely important one. The specialized education and training will provide you with the necessary tools and knowledge to be successful in the career of your choice. But how will you pay for it?

Education is an investment in your future. Before you choose your career, it is necessary to consider how much time, money, and commitment you have to prepare yourself for a career. Choosing the right career and paying for college takes planning, forethought, dedication, and commitment.

Financial Aid can be the stepping-stone to your future success. The purpose of financial aid is to assist students with their educational expenses so that financial barriers do not prevent them from achieving their educational goals.

What Is Financial Aid?

Financial aid is the assistance available to help students pay for the costs of attending a vocational-technical institution. Financial aid is provided by federal, state, institutional, or private sources and may consist of grants, loans, work-study, or scholarships. Each year, billions of dollars are given or lent to students, and about half of all college students receive some sort of financial aid.

Most financial aid is awarded based on financial need, college costs, and the availability of funds. This aid is provided to students because neither they nor their families have all of the resources needed to pay for a college education. This kind of aid is referred to as need-based aid.

What are the eligibility requirements?

In general, to be considered eligible for federal financial aid, you must:

o Be a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen

o Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited institution

o Be making satisfactory academic progress in your course of study

o Not be in default on any loan or owe a refund or repayment on any previous financial aid received at any institution attended

o Be registered with the Selective Service, if you are required to do so

Merit-based aid is awarded to students who may or may not have financial need. Students are given assistance because they have a special skill or ability, display a particular talent, have a certain grade point average, or are enrolled in a specific program.

Types and Sources of Financial Aid

There are several types of financial aid offered to help pay for educational expenses:

o Grants

o Loans

o Student employment (work)

o Scholarships.

Grants and scholarships are “gifts” and do not have to be repaid. Loans are borrowed money that must be paid back over a period of time, usually after the student leaves school. Student employment is normally part-time work arranged for a student during the school year. Wages received by the student are used for specific college expenses.

The primary source of aid for students attending a vocational institution of higher education is from the federal government. The federal government offers both grant and loan financial aid programs. State assistance may also be available. Other sources of aid that award money to students come from private foundations such as corporations, civic associations, unions, fraternal organizations, and religious groups. In addition, many companies offer tuition reimbursement to their employees and/or their employees’ dependents. The personnel department at either your or your parents place of employment can tell you whether or not the company offers this benefit and who may be eligible. Lastly, there are also some colleges that offer awards from their own funds or from money received from various organizations. This type of aid is often referred to as “institutional aid.” Although most vocational institutions have little or no institutional aid available, the student should still be sure to ask the college about this type of assistance.

Determining Financial Aid Eligibility and Financial Need

Eligibility for financial aid is determined by subtracting the amount you and your parents can contribute from the cost of attendance. An assessment of your family’s ability to contribute toward educational expenses is made based on the information you provide when applying for financial aid. Income, assets, family size, and number of family members in college are some of the factors considered in this calculation. This assessment, referred to as need analysis, determines your financial need, which is defined as the difference between the total cost of attendance and what you are expected to pay. Financial need will vary between colleges because of each school’s different costs of attendance.

Determining the Student’s Status: Independent or Dependent?

Remember that both students and parents are expected to help pay for college costs. This means that you, as the student, will be expected to contribute to your educational expenses.

If you are considered dependent by federal definition, then your parents’ income and assets, as well as yours, will be counted toward the family contribution. If you are considered independent of your parents, only your income (and that of your spouse, if you are married) will count in the need analysis formula.
To be considered independent for financial aid, you must meet one of the following criteria:

o Be at least 24 years old.

o Be a veteran of the U.S. armed forces.

o Be married.

o Be an orphan or ward of the court.

o Have legal dependents other than a spouse.

o Be a graduate professional student.

Applying for Financial Aid

To apply for financial aid, it is essential that you properly complete the necessary forms so that your individual financial need can be evaluated. It is important to read all application materials and instructions very carefully. The Financial Aid office of the school you are attending will be happy to provide you with guidance and assistance.

Most vocational schools use just one financial aid application called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is a four-page application available at your college’s financial aid office, local high school guidance offices, and state education department offices. Students can apply for federal student aid via the Internet by using FAFSA on the Web. FAFSA on the Web can be accessed at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Your Rights and Responsibilities as a Financial Aid Recipient

As a student consumer, you have a right to:
o Be informed of the correct procedures for applying for aid, cost of attendance, types of aid available, how financial need is determined, criteria for awarding aid, how satisfactory academic progress is determined, and what you need to do to continue receiving aid

o Be informed of the type and amount of assistance you will receive, how much of your need has been met, and how and when you will be paid

o Appeal any decision of the financial aid office if you feel you have been treated unfairly with regard to your application

o View the contents in your financial aid file, in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act;

o Know the conditions of any loan you accept.
It is your responsibility to:

o Complete all application materials truthfully and accurately and comply with deadline dates

o Review all materials sent to you and read and understand all documents. Be sure to keep copies of all forms you sign

o Know and comply with the rules governing the aid you receive

o Provide additional documentation and/or new information requested by the financial aid office

o Maintain satisfactory academic progress

o Keep your local and permanent addresses current with all pertinent school offices

o Use financial aid only for expenses related to the college

Remember that your dreams come true when you act to turn them into realities. Financial aid is the means by which you can achieve your dream of obtaining an education and pursuing your career. Use it wisely and you will succeed.

According to the American Association of Dental Schools, what you will have to pay in Student Loans after your graduation is a substantial amount indeed — upwards of $120,000! Even if you have a thriving practice after graduation, that amount of money is still a significant responsibility. What can you do today to help you manage the financial debt you will incur (or are incurring) from dental school so that you will be able to pay it back tomorrow as painlessly as possible?

See If You Can Go To School For Free

If you are in the process of applying to dental school, you should look into what Scholarships exist for which you might be eligible. The American Dental Association maintains a list of scholarships available. Contact them for information. Even if you can get a partial scholarship to dental school, this will go a long way toward making your financial debt from graduate school manageable. It’s always easier to pay back less money than more, right?

Live As Cheaply As Possible Before And During Dental School

If you are in the poorhouse at the moment, you might want to stop and think for a moment before taking on more than a $100,000 worth of debt. Is there a way that you can make some money before you go so that you can borrow less and have less debt to pay back once you’re out of school? If so, delaying your entrance into dental school would make a good deal of sense. And once you arrive in dental school, stick to the habits of frugality you worked so hard to develop while you were working to save for school.

Pay Off Any Debt You’re Carrying Prior To Your Arrival In Dental School

If you have decided to stay in the working world for a while to stockpile your savings before entry into dental school, you should allocate some of the money you’re making to paying off any debts you’re carrying at the moment. The bill from dental school is going to be big enough as it is. If you can get rid of credit card debt or pay off your car before your dental school loans come due, you will be in a much more comfortable position to repay them.

Meet With A Financial Aid Counselor To Determine The Best Plan For Borrowing

All of the lenders and different types of loans can overwhelm even someone with a great head for numbers. Meet with one of the professionals in the Financial Aid office and get all of your questions answered. Make sure you are borrowing from lenders that will charge you the most reasonable interest rates available to you. And remember, you’re living cheaply, so borrow only what you need!

Achieve Financial Freedom with Feng Shui

It’s the middle of the month and you are still struggling to pay the mortgage, car payment, and make sure the electric company doesn’t turn off your power. The kids need new clothes and shoes; the fridge is bare, and just once you want to be able to get through a month of bills without the never-ending agony. You’ve been there, you know you have. We all have. Most families and individuals struggle financially from time or time or constantly. It happens.

The frustrating part is that most of us work hard, try to be money savvy, and do without the little things to make sure that paycheck stretches. Some of us take second jobs just to make ends meet. The result of all of this work and feeling of treading water leaves us with a horrible energy imbalance. Even if the ideas of chi and energy are unfamiliar to you, you still feel the results. You don’t have patience with your children or spouse. On a personal level you know something isn’t right. You’re constantly tired and ill tempered. It’s time to get rid of your money worries once and for all. With the use of Feng Shui, financial freedom isn’t just a pipe dream. You can create the positive energy flows necessary to achieve peace of mind.

It’s no secret that money comes from work. For this reason, your work space is where you should focus your energy to produce a more balanced, harmonious environment. For those who work in an office outside their home, there are certain steps you can take to increase your wealth and productivity at work. It all adds up to positive steps in the right direction on the road to financial freedom.

Let’s take a look at how your desk is placed in the office. If at all possible your desk should be placed either directly facing or on a diagonal to the main door of your office. Under no circumstances should you sit with your back to the door. It is also important in Feng Shui to check door alignment. In other words if the office door across the hall isn’t in line with your office, use a mirror to promote the constant flow of energy. Not everyone has full walls in their work area. If you have partitions or partial walls, the use of mirrors is helpful here as well.

With the furniture in your work space placed properly, you can focus on more Feng Shui tips to improve your financial freedom. Plants are a tremendous help in this regard. Being green and full of life, plants will help to encourage growth and life in your job and money making ability. If you don’t have the time or inclination to grow a plant, artificial ones are just as effective. You have to be sure to keep them dusted and clean.

Finally focus on the decorations you place in your area. When you work outside the home, it may be easier on you to use things that aren’t obviously Feng Shui. The last thing the energy flow needs is negative comments and feelings from others. Luckily, Feng Shui works just as well with any type of décor as long as the placement is correct. Pictures and paintings are great for this purpose. Choose images that represent a variety of different elements and aspects of total balance. Any image that inspires positive feelings in you will help a lot.

On the home front, the home office Feng Shui rules is similar to the ones for outside office space. Obviously there are a few differences. If at all possible, have a separate entrance into your office. If that isn’t possible, place the space separate from your living quarters. This way you are able to separate work from home. In the event that your office must be part of the main house, separate your area with a partition or large plants. Remember from above how important green plants are to the flow of money and balance.

In either type of office, it is vitally important to Feng Shui and financial freedom to keep things clean and clutter free. Clutter represents a disorganized mind and physically blocks the flow of good energy. All supplies should be kept neatly stacked and labeled. If possible leave a few inches between the walls and your office furniture to further enable the positive chi to move through the space.

Sometimes it takes more than hard work to achieve financial freedom. Feng Shui is an amazing aid in creating the type of life you have always wanted for yourself and your family. With financial freedom comes a more peaceful existence, a balanced life, and the opportunity to more fully appreciate your loved ones. The steps are simple and make a huge difference in your ability to succeed.

First, Minimize Your Financial Debt Prior To Entering Law School

Your Student Loans are going to be a major financial obligation for you once you’ve earned your degree. Do what you can to ensure that they are among the only financial obligations you have in your fledgling law career. If you have credit card debt, do what you can to get rid of it. Credit card debt is never good, so it might even be worth forestalling entry into law school if you can rid yourself of the high interest of credit card debt with your current job. While credit card debt is the worst, any other debt you might have should be taken care of as well. Try to get that slate as clean as possible and your credit score as high as possible. You will thank yourself later.

Are There Any Scholarships For Which You Are Eligible?

Do some research in your application process. There are monies available for law school students, and if you qualify for any merit-based aid available, you should apply for it as soon as possible. Another great way to manage the financial debt from law school is to make sure you’re taking on as little as you possibly can.

Talk To Some Experts Before Borrowing

You have a wide array of lenders from whom to borrow, from the government to private lenders. All of these options can be overwhelming. Make an appointment a Financial Aid counselor to go over what the merits of the various lenders are. Do what you can to get the best interest rates. You will save yourself a lot of money when it’s time to repay your loans.

Borrow As Little As Possible

Surely starving students really should not starve, but you should also strive to live as frugally as possible in law school. You might have some ideas about what you think you can get paid after you earn your degree and pass the bar, but you don’t know for sure. Again, the best way to manage the financial debt from law school is to keep the amount you’ll need to repay as manageable as possible.

Have A Plan For Repayment In Place Before You Graduate

You will have six months after you graduate called a grace period. During this time, no payments on your loans are due. However, this time will fly by. Do the best that you can to secure employment before you leave school so that when the grace period is up, you have a way to begin sending those payments in on time.

Consolidate For The Best Rate

You will probably take out multiple loans, and at some point, you should consolidate them. You can only do this one time, so you should probably consult with an expert about when the smartest time for you will be to do so. When you consolidate, you lock in your interest rates and minimize the interest you’ll pay over the course of your loan repayment.

I owe almost $3500 in financial aid? I am thinking of applying to another college, but I am worried that I won’t get any Financial Aid since I already owe. Eventually, I will pay back my financial aid, but I was wondering is there a limit to the amount of financial aid you can receive?

I’m assuming that the $3500 that you owe in financial aid is a loan, probably a Federal Stafford Loan. Financial aid is looked at year by year and varies from each school. There are limits that you can reach for Stafford Loans if this is indeed what your current financial aid is owed. You can get up to $31,000 as a dependent student with no more than $23,000 being Subsidized over the course of attending college. Grants and Scholarships are usually not based as much on amount limits when going for your degree as much as time. For example, some grants stop after you get your bachelors. Some of them stop after 2 years whether you received a degree or not. Each one varies, but if you passed all your classes, you probably aren’t in much danger.

If you apply for another college, how much aid you can receive will change from your current status. For example, one college’s cost of attendance may be $23,000 in which case you could accept no more than that amount. If you looked at another school that was cheaper, say $15,000, you could not accept more than $15,000 in aid for the year.

The short answer (with knowing very little about your specific situation) is that you are most likely fine owing that amount and will still be able to go to another college and get financial aid. The best and most accurate advice would be to contact the school you are thinking of attending, make sure they have your FAFSA information by listing their Federal school code, see how many of your credits taken will transfer and let them know anything else they may request. This is the only way to get a sure answer. Hope this helps!

Financial planning is not limited to asset allocation, mutual funds, and fixed-income investments – planning should include every aspect of your life.

Should you apply for that credit card? What type of car insurance should you buy? Should we save for our child’s college or put money in our IRA’s instead? These and many more questions are all part of financial planning.

The Larry Rule – A Little Known Financial Planning Fact

Larry Lindsey is not a famous name, even in financial circles. Currently, Mr. Lindsey is the chief economic advisor to the Bush Administration. In 1996, he was a Federal Reserve Board Governor – and he was denied for a Toys ‘R Us credit card!

To apply or not to apply, that is the planning question. Larry Lindsey, who had excellent credit and a high-income level, set out to demonstrate a flaw in credit scoring algorithms.

He simply applied for every retail store credit card he was offered, and in no time he had “too many inquiries.” Never mind the fact that he had millions in assets and nary a late payment in his 30-year credit history.

Knowing the Larry Rule is key to your financial planning. If you apply for retail store credit cards every time you are asked to do so, it will have negative effects on your credit.

You may then be asked to pay a higher interest rate on your mortgage or home equity loan, which could cost you tens of thousands of dollars. Sacrificing $10,000 for a 10 percent discount at Fashion Bug is not smart planning!

Auto Insurance and Financial Planning

Most people think of insurance as a legal necessity, but in reality, it is a financial product, and that’s important to keep in mind. Don’t ever buy insurance just because it’s legally required or in order to give yourself peace of mind. Insurance must serve a financial planning purpose!

You need to have a planning strategy in mind when you purchase auto insurance. The insurance company’s goal is to get you to pay more in premiums than you take out in claims – thus, they profit.

Your goal should to pay as little in premiums as possible in order to be adequately covered. You don’t want to have to use your auto insurance, but at the same time, you don’t want to be subsidizing the bad drivers who take out more in claims than they pay in.

In order to develop a financial planning strategy for auto insurance, it’s important that you become as educated as possible on the subject. Luckily, there are dozens of great sites on the internet that provide free information on the various types of auto insurance plans, and the particular laws of your state.

Everyone has to own some form of auto insurance, and thus it should be the cornerstone of any intelligent planning strategy.

The Financial Planning Dilemma – College vs. Retirement

American parents love their children and will do almost anything to ensure they have every possible advantage. As a result, many parents save for their children’s college instead of saving for their own retirement. This act of selflessness is usually not a good planning strategy.

In order to avoid this mistake, one must have a decent understanding of financial planning tax implications. Most college savings accounts are taxed on some level, whereas financial planning products for retirement purposes generally are not. What’s more, saving for your child’s college can prevent him or her from receiving the maximum financial aid available.

In other words, by foregoing your retirement in favor of your child’s college, you are actually subsidizing the children of less responsible parents – or smarter parents who chose to save for their own retirement, in light of these facts.

College savings plans normally make financial planning sense only for parents with such high incomes that their children would not qualify for Financial Aid.
