What kind of financial aid is available to someone who spent 4 years active duty in the marines?

My son-in-law will be getting out of the Marines this summer after 4 years, and will be doing 4years inactive duty. Is there anyone out there who knows what is available for him in Financial Aid? From what I read about the GI bill online, I’m not even sure he’ll be eligible for that.

All students can apply for a financial aid at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Students who were active duty in the military should be able to access military educational benefits. If he served in Iraq or Afghanistan, the new GI Bill signed into law by President Obama allows all such service men to be eligible for full tuition, fees and books in addition to any and all other financial aid for which they may be eligible (Pell, SEOG, state grants, loans, etc.). The program is also transferable to spouse’s and dependent children if the service man or woman is not able to use it.

Your son-in-law should file a 2009-2010 FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov if he plans to begin in the Fall 2009, Winter 2010 (or spring 2010 depending on where you live :-) ) or Summer 2010. He should also get the necessary information regarding his chapter of eligibility and activation information at http://www.gibill.va.gov.

There are some significant changes to the VA educational benefits that should favorably impact your son-in-law.
